Stare Into The Abyss

Walks through sylvan glades and mountain meadows would be very different if you encountered things like this (monk fish) sitting on logs every so often. Kinda spoils the serenity.

Thanks for the video, Charles.

To think, we eat this guy, otherwise known as "poor man's lobster" since it's tail has the texture and taste of the more expensive crustacean.

Okay... why do people pick on my for my ocean-phobia? Things like THAT live in the ocean!

1) What's it sitting on? Is that a sunken man-made wall? Creep/awesome.
2) According to Andrew Zimmerman, a century ago, lobster was considered crap food, and Maine prisoners complained of cruel & unusual punishment if fed lobster for a week straight.
3) I totally agree with you on the ocean phobia.

Eesh. The jokesters at the Pike Place fish market had one of those on ice in their display, with a rope tied inconspicuously around its tail. When someone would quietly browse along, they'd jerk the rope to make the thing jump and scare the bejeezus out of you. Then of course naturally you would move along and laugh while they did it to the next person. They are yummy though.

Errr yeah, H. P. Lovecraft wrote about towns peopled by things like that. What's that plume it's giving off?

Anonymous said...

I think the plume is the silt that it stirs up when it moves about. It looks very much like actual smoke though...smoke from brimstone... might not be a fish but some demon actually...

Monkfish, like lobster, was once considered garbage and is now a delicacy. It does not, however, taste like lobster or I wouldn't eat it, because I rather agree with the Maine prisoners of yore.

I have a co-worker who once caught a 1 meter long monkfish. What you can't see in the video is that the beast looks like a head with a tail.
