Elephant Shrew

The elephant shrew is neither an elephant nor a shrew. They can be found in almost any environment in southern Africa, scampering about and probing with their noses in an effort to feed their insectivorous diet.

Are these legal to own in the US? I could use a few around my property. They could hunt down the crickets and spiders that plague me. I normally don't encourage rodents to take up residence around my house, but who couldn't use some more insect-eating creatures (spiders excluded)?

Thanks for the photo, Ida.

It's not a rodent anyway, but still the epitome of ugly-cute. You should see them live, their snouts flex up to 30 degrees or so as they sniff their way through leaf litter for bugs.

Aww, I don't think that thing's ugly at all!

It kind of looks like someone went crazy with the warp in photoshop - pullllled that nose out. The video booge linked is great - especially the baby with his little nose bobbing up and down like rubber. Too cute.

Wow, snooze. I've posted 1,500 photos on this blog, and you've found 1 to take umbrage with. Well done. In the mean time, I'll be happy with my .999 batting average.
