Beautiful Babirusa

I posted this picture over at my other blog this morning and someone looking over my shoulder said, "Aren't you posting that on the wrong site?"

Well, no, but it's certainly an animal that belongs here too. In fact, I was illustrating the following quote:

The Babirusa is one of the ugliest of the wild swine.

Really, what else do you need to know?

Babirusas by Flickr users cactusbeetroot and su-lin.

It looks as if it has to find a way to break off it's own horn before it pokes itself in the eye...

Must have a very specialised niche, do we know what it is?

I'm sorry, but I don't find him ugly at all. Peculiar, maybe, but not ugly. Of course, I live near Hollywood, so I'm used to seeing way out ugliness, so what do I know? :-D

@Jan:

You are correct; there have been cases of babirusas having their tusks grow so long that they pierced their own skulls.

Von, I am not sure what its niche is other than "ugliest of the wild swine," but follow that link to Tetrapod Zoology and you will find more information about babirusas than anyone could desire.

aaawww...he's not so bad...reminds me of that dog with all the xtra skin...but a BIG PIG! kinda cute in a weird kind of way. and i like those tusks! but they must be more for ornamental value...i can't see him stabbing anything with them, unless he stands on his head!
