You're looking into the lippy face of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). These freshwater eels are under threat. Their population looks to be down 90% since the 1970s, though it seems there isn't a consensus in the scientific community as to why (or any single cause).
As a side note, their young are so transparent that you can read a "newspaper through them". My little brother, who hasn't seen the sun since he discovered the PS3, is nearly as see-through.

Isn't eel pie a major European delicacy? That might account for their dwindling numbers... That or they've had more encounters with mirrors, and died of horror due to their own ugliness.
