Mothra's got some competition. This mini aircraft of a moth flew into the underside of Matt's porch at his place in south Texas. It measured in with a 7 1/4 inch wingspan. 
Is there anyone out there that can identify this winged beast? I'm sure Matt and his girlfriend would like some assurance that his house isn't being invaded by a fledgling gargantuan. Tokyo wouldn't mind some reassurance either, for that matter.

The size description alone leads me to believe it's either one of the Saturniid species of moths, or one of the Sphinx moth species. They're about as close to Mothra as you can get! But without a clear picture of the wing pattern, I can't tell which type it is. Can the picture-taker provide more detailed info about the wings? Like the color, any spots or splotches, and their shape...? That would help tremendously! :-)

ReplyDeleteDenita beat me to it but yeah, without a good look at the wing-patterns I wouldn't try to narrow the I.D. any further. I can tell you that it looks like a female, nto that it narrows things AT ALL. :D
