That's the pig-nosed turtle,
Carettochelys insculpta. I learned about it from an article at
Australian Geographic which told me all kinds of interesting facts about this species: It's the only surviving member of the family
carettochelyidae, it's an evolutionary transition between land and water turtles, and it's very tasty and could go extinct if hunting isn't curtailed.
But they couldn't tell me what I really wanted to know: If I posted this, would a whole bunch of you comment "That's not ugly, that's cute!"?

It's... sort of... cute...
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna go with ugly. It's like it's trying to be cute with those big eyes, but I don't think it's working out too well. And it's got a nose like a tapir, which is just weird.
Good blend of both I find.
ReplyDeleteI think it's cute, but the photographer took a really bad angle D8
ReplyDeleteI'm leaning toward ugdorable.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like turtle + tapir. It is also just plain adorable.
ReplyDeleteWell I do think it's cuter than a donkey!
ReplyDeleteNice one! Check out few other turtles in my blog: http://ugly-animals.blogspot.com/search/label/Ugly%20Turtles

Cute! At first I thought it was some kind of mammal I'd never seen before. It's cuter than most reptiles.
