Herpetologists Needed

We need some herpetologists to weigh in on this one.

The good people over at Scienceray are unable to identify this creature. It looks like a frog to me--one with heavy brows, thick lips, and oodles of wrinkles. Perhaps it's the sharpei of the amphibian world. I can't tell if it's feeling melancholy, pensive, or just hamming it up for the camera (look at that pose, with the chin resting on its hands...it's too much. I want to hold it and say everything's going to be all right). It's puffy swollenness reminds me of my own appearance after I've eaten too many salty foods.

Thanks for the article, Annica.

UPDATE: There seems to be a consensus among those better informed than I (a group which includes most of my readers). This is an unusually poofy White's Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea)

If it's a White's Tree Frog, why is it so puffy? None of the images I found look like that. It's very odd, like it's ingested something it shouldn't have.

  8. Maybe he has a seafood-allergy and ate something fishy :P

And it looks like he has big eyes, but that wither thing under the black is just the eyelid right?

I dó think he's cute and needs lots of comforting ^-^

It's a White's tree frog in red phase; pretty unusual. The extra "poofiness" could be due to any number of reasons, but isn't necessarily a sign of poor health. Just like some people are fatter or wrinklier than others...

This critter is all like "Woe is me". Perhaps its actually a rare 'Eyore Frog'? : P Anyway, not only is it really poofy, but it appears to have dandruff! Poor wittle Eyore/Whites Tree Froggy. I'll fetch you some Benedryl and a bottle of Head and Shoulders and things will be okay.
