Chinese Red

Our resident invert breeder extraordinaire, Jade, has a new friend he wants to share with us. It is a Chinese red centipede (Scolopendra sp.), now 6" long, soon to be 9" long. He is very mean and his venom is very, very potent.

The two photos in which he is curled up show him in the process of devouring a roach. My eating style is similar, which has gotten me kicked out of more than one all-you-can-eat buffet.

Thanks for the photos, Jade.

  1. I thought all you centipede lovers would enjoy ;)

  2. Reminds me of a nasty old chinese horror movie (Centipede Horror) having people spitting big living centipedes similar to this one out of their mouth. For real. Yuck.

  3. Oddly enough, this doesn't give me the horrid case of the willies that I would expect from a monster centipede. I think it's the legs - they're too solid looking. I wonder what it looks like moving...that'd probably get me.

  4. Ugly yes. But it's eating roaches. So now I'm conflicted. Now it doesn't seem bad at all!

  8. I'd rather not see one for real (they make me jump,) but this one makes me think of one of those beautiful old Chinese brush drawings, or ideograms.
