What Are Those Languages for?

Jackpot alert! Jackpot alert!

I can't read the Russian on the site posting these photos, so I don't know what kind of dogs these are. I tried using Google's translator (link), but couldn't glean any additional information. In fact, the translation was rough--the word 'tongue' features prominently in the Russian version (no surprise, given the puppies), but Google translated the word as 'language'. So you end up with Russians commenting on the photos and asking what the dogs use those languages for. I can see why the Russian to English is still in BETA.

But I digress...

Those over-sized tongues and the hairlessness are reminiscent of a Chinese crested / chihuahua mix. That's the best I can come up with.

But anyways, enjoy the photos, enjoy the pups, enjoy the lolling tongues and oily skin, and enjoy the Russians enjoying their dogs.

Thanks for the photos, Katrien.

I wonder why the tongues hang out so much! The one on the right in most of the pics looks like his tongue is beginning to dry up!! I think that their (so-called) ugliness makes them all the more endearing! They can't help the way they look, and they probably love their people soooo much!

The dog who won the Ugly Dog contest this year was the same way, tongue-wise, and his owner said it is because he is missing teeth. So his tongue just kind of slides out of his mouth.

That's the case with most dogs whose tongues hang out. Why all three of these would be missing front canines like that, I shudder to imagine.

If you have dogs of your own, it's good to remember this, the only thing keeping your dog's tongue in place are those long front teeth. When those go, it's pretty ugly.

Those are the hairless variety (there's a "powderpuff" variety with fluffy white hair, but alas, just as few teeth) of the chinese crested breed. The same gene that gives them the chance to be hairless (hairless and powderpuff are frequently born in the same litter) also gives them a predisposition to be both born without many teeth and if they are born with enough teeth, to lose them very early.

I agree with teratomarty!! But I also agree that they look like sweethearts, the little babes...

The blackened tongue is pretty disturbing if it's not just a pigment issue. And I guess you wouldn't have to worry about this breed chewing your shoes or furniture. Gumming their food would be enough of a chore.

Resisting my usual rant about stupid breeding...

they were used as both mobile heaters (put in the beds of the kings) and food in ancient aztec times.

well, not these ones specifically, but a very similar breed. only problem is they're allergic to wool.

anyhow, I don't see how breeds like the Pekingese are any less stupidly bred than these dogs. I mean, at least I don't have the urge to place a mop handle in these dogs and use them for household chores.

From my limited knowledge of russian and my tiny dictionary, I made out the headline as "Funny breed of dog" :)
The two first comments are "1" and "Number one!!!!"

i think those are mexican hairless dogs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Hairless_Dog

but with the round heads and bulging eyes, they may have chihuahua or something else mixed in.

They look like the hyenas on Lion King. A bit.

anonymous: the chinese crested is just a sub-breed of the mexican hairless variety. it has nothing to do with china. you can see that some of these dogs have hair on their foreheads. mexican hairless never do, their hair is almost always only on the very end of the tail.

meg, the difference between breeding pointless breeds like the peke and these guys is that at least the pekes have all their parts. i have a serious issue with breeding and animal that is fundamentally carnivorous but is bred to be without functional teeth! that's what's wrong about it.

These pups are riding a fine "so ugly they're cute" line in my book.
