Disney had it right when they casted hyenas as the bad guys in The Lion King. These matriachal, pack-hunting, feline-related, opportunistic carnivores are one of the many ugly creatures that Africa has produced.

If you poke around online you may come across sites that are done by hyena-apologists. They claim that hyenas are really misunderstood - that they are intelligent, communal, and wonderful beasts.
They are wrong. These beasts are nasty and ugly, with very few - if any - redeeming qualities. Really, the only thing worthwhile about these animals is that they are worthy of this website.

Deep Sea Abomination
The tsunami that struck last year washed up a lot of ugly deep sea creatures. Luckily those who recovered these nasties were good enough to take photos for us.
I wish I knew what this creature is called. I began a search online to find its name, but I didn't know where to begin. What key words would I use? 'abominable fish,' 'hideous sea creature,' 'ugly big tooth black fish'? Maybe one of our readers can identify it for us.
I think I will settle for calling him, 'I'm glad you're stuck in the deep sea, because you are ugly.'
Once again, this fish proves that if you are a creature that never sees the light of day, you are pretty well guaranteed to be ugly.

Blood Sucker
Pretty much everything that sucks blood is going to be ugly. Add in a bat to the description and you have a wonderful recipe for abomination.
You've got to love the vampire bat (photo courtesy: www.abdn.ac.uk). Not all bats are ugly - the flying fox is a good looking creature, for instance - but this particular specimen above would be a first-class citizen in Uglyland.
Just look at this vampire bat sucking on a cow. Ugly and very creepy. Always a good combo.

Ugly to the Fourth Degree
This creature, known as the naked mole-rat, has four degrees of ugliness:
1) Natural ugliness - needs dental work!
2) Subterranean
3) Hairless
4) Vermin
Doesn't get much worse.

Aptly Named Warthog
When looking for good ugly, you can't go wrong doing an image search for warthogs. These beasts were aptly named.
I wonder if they are good for eating?

Ugly Baby?
Just to prove the whole hairless = ugly theme, here is a baby rat. I happen to think that your average adult pet rat isn't ugly. But they sure do produce some ugly babies. Aren't babies meant to be cute?
Rats, hear me now. You could really improve your vermin image if you began producing cute babies. You'll never learn, will you?

Here Kitty-Kitty
This cat (photo courtesy www.daveshearon.com) was actually entered into the World's Cutest Cat contest. Don't think so. There seems to be a theme here. So many ugly animals - be they individuals or an entire species - are hairless. It is difficult to find a truly ugly cat. But, take away the fur, and you are left with an abomination. This cat is probably of the sphinx breed.
From what I have heard, beyond the ugliness of these cats, they also tremble constantly from being cold, and have oily skins. You can't get much more hideous than being a trembling, oily, and hairless creature.

Little Brown Bat
Some times it isn't the individual animals that are ugly. Entire species seem to be cursed. Here is a little brown bat.
This one appears to be hairless. Nice.

Sam, the World's Ugliest Dog
This is the famous Sam, reknowned for his hideousness and being the three-time, undefeated champion of the 'World's Ugliest Dog' competition. He died just this November. His image is a natural starting point for this site.
Truly a face only a mother could love.
